at the beginning of the subjects that jim leherer will introduce. and discussing not policing 30-second rebuttals and 60-second statements. none of that red light stuff with the clocks and all of that stuff. and when you're in mitt romney's position, where he's actually trying to hide some things, trying to hide the details of the deduction side of his tax plan, he's still hiding his tax returns. when you're that candidate who has things that you don't want to talk about, those very narrow rules are your friend. the red light is your friend. the very limited 30-second response, 60-second response works well for candidate who trying to dodge and trying to get away from things. president obama, i think is going to have an advantage in the way the non-rules are in this debate tonight. and i also think that mitt romney has come off a series of really easy debates. we have to remember, mitt romney triumphed in a republican presidential field that was the worst republican presidential field in the history of the republican party. those are the debates he won. he was the one on the stage who did not loo

hours away. let's go straight to denver and to jim acosta. and, jim, does team romney, do they see the polls we ran through, is this a sign the race is tightening, is the wind in romney's sails, is it there going into tonight? >> they do, actually. i just got off the phone with a couple of romney campaign sources, brooke. i can tell you that the romney campaign does see this race tightening right now and that their game plan for tonight, as it was laid out to me, is to make sure that trajectory as one romney campaign source put it continues. they want to see the race continue to tighten. it is interesting to give you a couple of nuggets i got off the phone call a few moments ago, they are not going to be looking for a knockout punch tonight. what they're hoping to do for the american people is show a contrast, a clear contrast as they call it between the president's handling of the economy and what mitt romney would do were he elected president to fix the economy. so that is basically the game plan from the romney campaign, do no harm and live to fight another day. >> it is interes

, jim lehrer asked that and i thought they stated their case and mitt romney stated it well where he said he doesn't believe the federal government can do much that is better than the private sector can be left to do or individuals can do and barack obama, you know, he started by saying the major role of government is keeping its people safe. but that is a fundamental disagreement between conservatives and liberals. i think -- i don't know that too many people would have been confused about their answers or would have expected them to say something else but i think it's important that your vote this time around is determined by what role you think government should have. the key difference to remeer is in the last four years with the economic collapse, we live in a world, in a country where 71% of economic decisions are directed by the american, by the voter, by the consumer. when that drops, because of the fact that people don't have money and they don't have jobs, who fills in for it? >> the fed. >> that is what some of the thinking is. the government should play a bigger role in d

or are they being more clear eyed in the assessment of it? >> they're being more clear eyed, jim. some private grumbling about jim lehrer. you're hearing some people say with the halperin quote you said, kind of downplaying the significance of this thing. most people made up their minds. you're hearing what mike mentioned a few minutes ago, people saying yeah, romney did well stylelisticly but not substantively. i can tell you on the republican side i'm sensing real confidence. the republicans are the first people to get in the spin room. they came pouring in with their placards during the closing statements. obama people came a couple minutes later much more aggressive. i've been trying not to just talk to romney campaigners and republicans not closely associated with romney campaign people like al cardenas, chairman of the american conservative union, rudy giuliani, not always a mitt romney fan. they're all telling me they really think the dynamic of the race shifted a little bit. we'll see how much. the spirit is high among republicans and it seems relatively authentic. >> james writes a pr
